Learn how to build nest boxes for your backyard
Learn how to build nest boxes for your backyard with one of the leaders in the field, at the next workshop held by Nature Conservation Margaret River Region.
“One of the most valuable resources for native animals are large old trees that have developed hollows, but many of these trees have been lost due to clearing and there’s now a severe shortage for hollow-using animals like owls, cockatoos, micro bats and mammals,” says Nature Conservation’s Peta Lierich.
“However, a well-researched and designed nest boxes on your property can be a major win for wildlife.”
Nature Conservation have recruited next box expert Simon Cherriman to run a workshop in the Margaret River region on February 18, 2023 from 9am-12.30pm (location to be confirmed).
Mr Cherriman has more than 20 years’ experience working as an ornithologist, eagle researcher, wildlife documentary maker and nest box advocate through his business, Insight Ornithology, and a project he started called the Re-Cyc-Ology Project. He has also just published Hollowed Out, a book all about this topic.
“In the workshop, Simon and Danielle from Re-Cyc-Ology will share their expert knowledge on habitat and nesting boxes and cover key theory about tree hollows, habitat loss and how nest boxes can help wildlife,” Ms Lierich said. “Then, they’ll guide you through the construction of a long lasting, feral bee-resistant nest box, which you can take home and install on your property.”
Supervised children are welcome to attend and families are encouraged to work together to construct their nest box, so please just reserve one ticket per family/household as places are limited. Water based paint will be used as part of the session so bring an art smock or old shirt to protect your clothing. Nest boxes will be constructed with hand tools only.
