Renowned local artist Leon Pericles has created a bespoke work of art dedicated to the conservation efforts in our beautiful Margaret River region.
And it’s up for grabs at a special silent auction – with the funds going to Nature Conservation Margaret River Region to support, protect and enhance our nature and biodiversity.
Pericles describes the work as a love letter to conservation efforts for the Margaret River region, and it features the names of local Margaret River identities. The artwork is a watercolour with line work along with historical postage stamps, and is beautifully framed.
Nature Conservation general manager Drew McKenzie said: “We think it’ll look amazing at a private residence or better yet on display at a local business or winery.”
Pericles has even offered to include an optional plaque which states that the artwork was purchased to help protect and conserve nature in our region.
The artist created the work during Margaret River Region Open Studios recently, when he was inspired by all the incredible people we have living down here – and all they do to contribute. And if you’re not already mentioned in it, Leon has also offered to paint your name or business name into it!
The piece is on display at REDSEA Gallery Margaret River at 83 Bussell Highway in Margaret River, where the public can view the artwork. The auction timeframe has been extended and bids now close on November 30.
Pericles is an Australian painter and master printmaker who has held more than 160 solo exhibitions. He’s won national and international acclaim over a career spanning more than 50 years. And his work has shown in the national and state galleries of Australia. His creativity and imagination, combined with impressive technical skills, has cemented him as one of Australia’s most prominent and prolific artists.
Sometimes narrative, often whimsical and frequently absurd, his ruminations on society and our unique landscape have also made us more aware of the ideas that shape us as West Australians. And that alludes to Leon’s advocacy and activism for the environment, which is why he’s also an official ambassador of Nature Conservation – and a great advocate in our community.
