Nature Conservation Margaret River Region will put the spotlight on fungi – and the bigger lessons they can teach us about resilience, adaptation and change – at its next Environmental Sundowner.
The event will be held at Margaret River HEART (Nala Bardip Mia, Main Theatre) on Thursday 28 August, 6:15pm–8pm, and will feature a short screening from the acclaimed IMAX film Fungi: Web of Life, narrated by the extraordinary artist Björk.
Following the film, three expert speakers will offer unique perspectives:
- Dr Tom May, leading mycologist at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (joining via Zoom), on the role of fungi in ecology and conservation (pictured, above).
- Zac Webb, Wadandi cultural custodian, on cultural resilience, fire, and listening to Country.
- Aaron Jaggar, new chief executive officer of Nature Conservation Margaret River Region, on resilience lessons from Christchurch’s earthquake recovery, the surprising hope in reimagining the landscape, and his own conservation leadership journey.

Aaron Jagger will speak on resilience lessons from Christchurch’s earthquake recovery.
Guests will enjoy light supper, a complimentary drink on arrival, and the opportunity to take part in an audience Q&A with the panel.
Mr Jaggar said this fascinating sundowner is aimed at sparking conversation and connection. “Fungi are the hidden connectors in nature’s web, and they also provide us with powerful metaphors for how communities adapt, regenerate and endure change,” he said.

Zac Webb will speak at Nature Conservation’s next Environmental Sundowner
Nature Conservation’s Environmental Sundowner series was launched in 2022 to bring the local community together for thought-provoking conversations on the big issues facing nature, people and place. The 11 events to date – made possible thanks to funding from the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River – have built a strong following by blending insightful speakers with a welcoming, social atmosphere.
The latest sundowner is set to inspire everyone from conservationists and community advocates to creatives, business owners, students and changemakers from all walks of life.
Tickets are $15 for members and $25 for non-members including a free drink and light supper. See www.natureconservation.org.au/events/. Memberships can also be purchased or renewed online or at the event for $30 per year.
